I had never heard of lung collapses either i had heard about people having punctured lungs due to stabbed, shot and ra broken rib puncturing the lung but thats all.
Then when i was at the hospital having a chest drain put in i was told its common in males who are tall and thin, but females can also have it happen but at a reduced risk.
Why does it happen in males was the question i wanted answers to and after speaking with a surgent i was told that males take longer and depper breaths which can stretch the lung and resault in a lung been damaged.
I will say this its very very painful, you get a sharp stabbing pain in your chest then your breathing goes, its not like you can't breath just each breath you take is painful and the pain never stops.
There is only three things that can be done to treat a lung collapse depending on how bad it is, lets start with the slight collapse. The treatment for this is rest and with no heavy duties such as long walks although you would more than likely stay in bed because it hurs to laugh so you can imagine how much it will hurt to walk also you can't walk very far anyway.
Then there's a half collapse which the treatment is a needle which is placed into your chest, the needle is then connected to a pump like thing which is used to suck the air out, if this doesn't help then the next treatment is what is used for a full collapse which is what i had the first time it happened.
Anyway they then insert a chest drain which means staying in hospital for as lung as it takes to remove all the air and the lung to be fully inflated again. If this does't work then the final treatment is to have surgery where they place some sort of chemical into the chest just before the lung linning and the wall which sticks the lung to the wall.
Unfortunatelly there is nothing anyone can do to provent a lung collapse and its becoming a more regular thing today.
Sorry thourght i would explain it better, so that it answers any questions anyone might have had although if anyone still has any questions please feel free to ask i will try my best to answer them for you.
Sorry, admin. I meant that it was the first I had of your personal experience. I've heard of lung collapses before, but I'll admit I didn't know any of the details. I didn't realize it would happen in one so young, either.
Unfortunatly a lung collapse is common in people up to the age of 30+ not sure if that means the risk is less or if most people that have had them are able to do something that reduces there chances either way i just hope no one has to go through that including myself, its painfull and no one likes hospitals lol.
